Hatfield Mccoy in December?
I have two weeks off for Christmas and we're ready to make reservations for lodging. Is the any reason the HM trail is not a good idea at that time of year? Any special gear or advice? It will be our first trip there.

This is coming from a born and raised WV Mountaineer....
Pack for VERY cold temps...you will be in a higher altitude so its gonna get very cold in the early mornings and later evening. I highly suggest getting a locator beacon God forbid something happen. I have one only because I do some backpacking in the BackCountry of the Cranberry river here in WV and you hardly ever see a single person. But reason to get one is because you may not have anyone come accross you if you are out and something happens. Other than that....just pack extra warm and take a small survival kit with you.
Good luck and have fun! Hoping to go down there before Christmas for the last time this year!!!!
Matt

Thanks, Vortecz. I didn't take altitude into account. That will make a difference. Concealed Carry? I see that WV is a reciprocal state. Should we expect rain, snow, mud or just pack for the apocalypse?

Which HM system are you planning to ride? There is usually a group that ride out of Ashland Resort, Indian Ridge system, every new years. We have woke up to temps as low as 2. If it is not too cold riding in winter is nice since with no leaves you can see the hills and valleys in the distance. We take clothes for all weather conditions and put on what we need. The worst thing is to ride in rain when it is cold.

2 degrees? Bob, you're scaring me! I guess it's better to know. What's that saying "ignorance is blissfully freezing to death"? The group will have to go without me, my New Years tradition is sleeping in my own bed.

I would plan for the worst and hope for the best at that time of year. As for Concealed Carry.... well....LOL.....ummmm, yeah I have mine here in WV and yes I carry everyday...but the rules state that there is no firearms allowed on the trails....so take that for what its worth...haha. I am with you on the new years ride...i'm at my house in my bed.
Good luck!
Matt

As cold as its been already this year, we might be in for big big snows this year. Christmas can be hit or miss at times.

Just outside Matoaka. The new H/M trail is supposed to go somewhere just above where I live! Can't wait for that!
