The UP

My family has had a hunting cabin in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in the Rudyard area in the Hiawatha Forest for many years now. I have recently developed an interest in using it as a base for backwoods lake fishing trips and for atv riding in the area. However, I do not know anything about what and where there it to ride around there. I know the lower peninsula has public riding but I don't know if the UP does as well and if there is anything in that area. Any information from someone who is from the area or rides in the area would be greatly appreciated.

I'm from the western UP and have done some riding Newberry but I don't know about the Rudyard area. We use to run the powerlines and a portion of the snowmobile trail years ago in the Trout Creek area and it was fun in a full size truck on 40" tires but I haven't been there is several years.

Not sure about your specific county, but some of the places I go allow ATVs on county roads with helmet, ORV sticker and stay under a certain speed.

ditto ive road in the cisco lake chain/watersmeet area and we've always road the quads from the cabin to the lake/bar/resorts on road, like he stated there is a helmet law and ORV sticker is needed. guess i didnt know about the speed limit.

I've been to the U.P. four times to ride and there is an amazing amount of riding areas but you really need to get VVMapping software for your computer and GPS. The software is very accurate and you can plot a route on your computer and then upload it onto your GPS or just use the GPS to navigate. It's well worth the price of I believe around $40. All the open county roads, forest roads, trails and routes are listed on the software. The website is vvmapping.com.
