3 light system

i found plenty of ways on how do to the 3 light system on this site and a couple other sites. when i bought my atv it had that diode version. and when i installed my 8000k 35 watt hids it worked for about a week and then started working the way the factory intended it to (2 lights on lows and the pod high) so i decided to do the relay version thinking the diode went bad or something (idk if thats possible or not) when i used the relay and the info from this thread: Convert To 3 Light System - Can-Am ATV Forum. it still worked as the factory made it. i was wondering if it was because the power that the ballasts draw or if there was a fuse or something i could have blown or if i need a bigger relay. any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
-Seth

With a meter put the black lead a good ground ( neg. side of battery if leads are long enough) and unplug the wire that is on terminal #30 on the relay. Put the red lead from the meter on the #30 pin on relay. Now turn key on and switch the lights to high beam. You should now have 12 volts reading on the meter. If you do not, it is either wired wrong or you lost the 12 volts on pin #87 (due to a blown fuse or bad splice). While you are at it make sure pin # 85 has a good ground. I am assuming the relay numbers are correct, I am going off the post you have attached. I did mine so long ago I can't remember the relay numbers and which wires they go to. Good luck.

Your best bet would be to use a relay setup to supply power to the lights. it's not a difficult modification and it allows a full 12v to flow directly through the relay to the lights rather than going through the switch. The headlight switch would basically turn the relay on and off. I read on some other forums of people having trouble with the headlight switch failing as it was not designed to handle the load of having all 3 lights on at the same time. Don't know if this is a problem, but I felt I would rather be safe than sorry and use a relay rather than a diode setup. I also made the "backup light" mod that allows my "worklights" to function as reverse lights. Great for on the trail in a group as the lights come on and serve as a warning that I'm going to back up. Also good for plowing snow at night, so I don't have to turn the worklight switch on and off.
