Rear Cargo boxes - Advice needed

I don't see much discussion about the subject or I am not searching the right querry. Oh, and I have a 2004 500 sportsman

I am needing a hard rear box, and have a few types in mind. I would like one that has a backrest for the occassional passenger (I don't want one with a full seat as passengers are seldom).

So the 4 models that have my interest are the Polaris, 2 versions of the rage, The moose and the raider (the moose has no backrest which has dropped it to the bottom unless someone has an opinion.

And is there something else i should be looking at?

Thanks
Carl

well.. NO box whatso ever will be comfortable for the passenger if it wasnt intended for one.
so the backrest, unless its for you, wont do anything to the passenger, as sitting on the atv seat (2 big guys or something equivalent )
the seat is short enough that 2 people barely fit on it, let enough be comfortable.

as for the box itself, nothing beats polaris.
2-3 friends of mine have boxes (polaris and 2 others have dif brand boxes)

by how much fits inside, and how waterproof they are, nothing beats the polaris...
my friends with the other boxes always complain, either about water getting in, the cheap quality of them or so...

hope i helped.

oups. i didnt know that about the lock and ride system. i knew they werent there on 2001-2002 models, just didnt know it way all the way up to 2005.

as for boxes, i still think polaris makes one of the best boxes around... they look good, are durable, and so on.

there MIGHT be better ones here and there. but you just cant beat the polaris ones in terms of how they are easy to find for a decent price...

plus on some boxes, and for an awesome look, nothing beats having a "polaris" logo or lettering on the box... just to "remind" your friends of what you are driving, and what they are. make them jealous.

happy new year!

Yes I missed the 04, didn't buy my 1st SP till 07, didn't have hard boxes on the old Scramblers.

You could always sit the Polaris box on the rack and drill a couple holes inside for the lock and rides. This would be nicer than having straps and bungees holding it on.

pay attention hugeyota, lots of tricks up my sleeve

I run 12 miles on the roads just to get to the lake, then who knows how far out on the ice to fish. I needed as much room as I could get, knowing its a long trip back home. I ended up with this: Moose Utility Division - Product Catalog

I used the Lock and Ride anchor system to secure it to the rack. However, I used the expansion anchor kit Pt# 2876519 and used the rear rack holes on my 2011 and replaced the handles in the front with screws, which don't stick up inside the box for the front. This box is huge and the rubber seal keeps out water.

I looked over the Polaris Lock and Ride boxes and found them to be to small.

I have a Polaris one and it works well. I do have problems with dust getting in but not to bad. I wish they had removable drain plugs in the bottom so you could jjust hose them out when needed.

Works for the kids as a back rest to for riding and for them to hold on. Kids are bigger though and Im more careful with them anyway.

I woudl like one that has an actual seat/backrest that wraps around more, but it came with the quad when I bought it. If I had to buy new I might go that route instead.

Does look good with the huge Polkaris name on it

If the dust gets in through the lid open it up and get some black silicone caulking and run a nice bead around the top where the lid meets the box let it dry and then you have an air tight seal.

just watch out and dont get it TOO airtight, id leave 1/8" of a hole to let air in and out...
being airtight is a big plus, but it might cause pressure inside and bent/break something... or worse... some sensitive electronic gadget...
plus, as temperature rises, water inside the box begins to evaporate, this being said, you want to let that humidity out... unless you want fully wet things inside...
the boxes being black will heat up really fast...
hope i helped.
