Melted Plastic, anyone else?

So my plastic melted under the seat right above where the pipe turns down towards the muffler. I was aware this could be a problem because of a friend who has a 2010 850xp with the same problem. I only have 14 hours on my bike and it has already melted a hole through the plastic under the seat.

Has anyone else had this problem? Could this be a possible warranty fix? It's kind of ridiculous that it would melt that quickly. I even tried deflecting heat by wrapping the pipe but it didn't work.

Can you post a pic of the underside? I'd like to see from the pipe side where you are talking about. If its where I'm thinking, my '11 has a shield there.

Ill have to get a picture later, it's right where the pipe makes a sharp bend down under the right rear fender. There is a heat shield, but it doesn't wrap all the way around the pipe, just half of it.

I've sent my dealer an email with that pic attached, hopefully I can get that fixed up while I'm still under warranty.

I have an 07 800 and mine melted near the exhaust also but the guy I got it from gave me an extra set of plastics he got through warranty and this set was supposedly not supposed to melt but I put the new plastics on right before my first ride on it and after a 5 hour ride they melted again, same spot. I think my bike is out of warranty so I'm probably just going to put some heat reflective tape on it and see.. It is pretty aggrevating

I would try the heat tape, maybe get some exhaust wrap to put around the pipe

I wrapped the exhaust in the bend area when I got the bike, it still melted right through. I've got an email out to the dealer, maybe I'll get an answer back pretty quick on it.

Heard back from the dealer today, Polaris accepted the warranty claim and new rear plastics have been ordered for my bike. They are also going to check out the backfiring issue I've been having, said it was probably just spark plugs but wanted to take a look at it.

I'm liking this warranty stuff, might have to purchase the extended warranty!

Melted Plastic

I purchased a 2012 Sportsman 850 less than three months ago it is now back in the shop for the second time with the melted plastic this time worse than the first. It looks like it may have started burning the second time around. I am hoping they put a better heat sheld on it and find out why it is running so hot causing this problem. Has anyone else had this problem and what did they do to correct it?

My 550 did the same thing. Come to find out, the heatshield material had fallen off. Had to go get some from the autoparts store, clean the plastics up good and apply the new material. Been good since.
