2011 Sportsman 800 tire upgrade....

Going to wait till spring...but I am looking to go just a tick bigger in size to fill out the fenders. But how do I go about this with the stock tire wheel size? I would get new rims....but I am hard as nails on rims and dont wanna drop the cash to ruin them.

So can I put a 27x9x12 on a 25x8x12 rim? Does this make sense?

Also, suggestions for tires....Hatfield McCoy trail worthy....and in my case mud hole tried and true!

Matt

Good morning and WELCOME Matt! In a word, YES, but...

Here is some more information, (Apologies if you know this, no offence meant) the 12 number is your RIM diameter. The 8&9 numbers are the width of the TIRE and the 25 & 27 are TIRE diameters.

So YES ABSOLUTELY a 27" x 9" x 12" tire will fit your rims.

The bigger question is will it clear under the fenders with its back spacing. Maybe yes, maybe not. That will depend on the tread design. See 99% of 8" tires clear but say 50% of 9" tires clear but less than 20% of 10" tires clear with the stock BS rims. Meaning spacers OR new rims are needed.

Then to further confuse things, not all 27" tires are 27"... Some are less while others are MORE!!

What tires exactly are you looking at?

Check out these steel wheels. I had them on my X2 and now they are on the wifes 500. Very tough, strong wheel. Will take all the abuse you throw at them. You can get them for around $40 each if you shop around a little.

ITP TIRES - The World's #1 ATV Aftermarket Tire & Wheel Source :: Delta Steel
I have 26-9-12 and 26-12-12 tires mounted on them.

Of your choices I would have to side with the XTR. I have the reg BH and think they are acceptable in the mud, but, admittedly, they are not known as a mud tire. The BH 2.0 has thinner lugs supposedly for a lighter tire...

Something else to consider is the GBC Spartacus tire. Its also a Radial, it has 8 plies and is a proven mud performer!!

We also have two great sources right here on our board from supporting members. The ATV SUPER STORE and DISCOUNT TIRE!! Personally, I would call Thor at super store first and see what he has to say. Personally I like supporting people who support us and these guys are top notch!

Thanks for the great info! This will be a spring time upgrade...just want to see what my options are and what is out there. I will deffinately call Thor when the time rolls around. I will look more into the ITP as I have not much heard about the GBC brand...though sure they are top notch.

Thanks again and I LOVE this site!!! Much better that a certain truck web site I belong to and that people here are way more helpful and not a bash fest on everything posted!

I take it your bike has 25" tires on it now.

As far as a 27" tire to fit your stock wheel, no problem as long as it is a 12" tire. The only problem you will have using a 9" tire on a stock wheel is in the front, with the tire rubbing the tie rod end. In that case, you will need spacers.

As for trail tires, I would get Bighorns or anything equal.

For mud tires, you should look at Mudzillas, Outlaws, or Silverbacks. None of these are intended for trail use though.

Good luck with your choice!

2010 Sportsman here with 26" Maxxis Zillas..great tire, digs the heck out of your grass, but I have an issue with the rear tires rubbing the rear tie rod. I have 1 " spacers but haven't put them on yet. I just had the quad on the back of my 2010 silverado and saw that there is only a 1/4" of room between the wheel wells. Im afraid that with the spacers it wont fit!!!

We agree with Cwlong shot that the GBC Spartacus is an excellent tire especially if you are looking for a mud tire.

Here is some additional information about the Spartacus from GBC"

Spartacus is a new performance ATV tire specifically designed to conquer mud and other tough terrains. You can be confident because Spartacus' aggressive tread design delivers superior traction while the radial 8-ply rated carcass construction puts more rubber on the ground for a larger footprint and a smoother, more comfortable ride

Let us know if we can be of assistance.
