Tire weight ?

Anybody know the weights of the Maxxis stock tires on a 2011 sportsman 550 x2?
Just curious because I would like to keep the weight similar when I upgrade to new tires because I've heard that going to a heavier tire will cause premature wear/failure of certain parts.
How much heavier can I go without damaging my machine? BTW, I'm not interested in modifying my machine to accommodate heavier tires. If that is necessary, I won't go heavier.

As far as modifying your machine you wont have too unless your going with a BIG mud tire..im not sure of the weight but if you stay within about an inch of stock size you will be fine. Im running close to stock size but I installed a clutch kit both to compensate for the tires and to go faster from a dead stop. I'd recommend maxxis Bighorns or ITP Terracross tires

Pit Bull Rockers 25.5x8 and x10x14 were made for you. Very versatile tread, 8 ply, an excellent all around trail tire. They will take you where ever you want to go, and no mods necessary. The front tire unmounted weighs 25.4lbs and the rear 30.4lbs. I don't think you'll find another tire of that quality, that's as close to stock size...I've looked. I really like mine. I'll never buy another brand tire. My tire weights came from pitbulltires.com web site. Do you ride over around Lake Texoma?

I vote for the pitbull tires. I have the rockers 26.5 and they are a tuff tire. Check this link out it has tire weights for the different tires.

If you are upgrading tires, they are going to be heavier than the stockers, especially if you go with radials. Manufacturers go to great lengths to put the cheapest tires they can get on their ATV's (with a couple of exceptions). That will almost always equal a lightweight tire.

If you are looking to keep the weight as close as possible, you will probably have to go with Zilla's (not radial). The Zilla's are a good tire, and you won't need to do any mods to make up for the slightly additional weight.

It all depends on what you ride on/ in (mud, rock, snow, trail, etc). If you wanna stay similar size and weight, the maxxis bighorn 2.0 were made to have the same tread design but be lighter then the originals. you may also like the zillas as mentioned before and i have heard nothing but good things about the gbc tires.

I understand your thinking, but what you need to realize is your tires are lighter because they are lighter constructed, they have less materials like belts. One of the biggest reasons we upgrade is to get a heavier duty tire. This comes from more belts, the cost is weight the benefit is durability. Your stockers are most likely 2 ply tires and for easy clear trail riding may be sufficient. But start riding in the woods with small sticks and stumps or in the rocks where pinched side walls and sharp edges will quickly tear up these light weights.

Now having said this, there are improved tires without getting a heavy weight cause weight alone doesn't immediately mean durability. Guys have given you good examples of tires we have found to be durable and weight acceptable. Worst case, simply throw in a clutch kit. They are not that expensive and offer improvements across the board.

Not doubting you, but I was not aware of any manufacturer installing such a tire stock...

My 700 Came with PTX Radials. Most people know these are relabeled and made for Polaris by Carlisle and are actually there ACT radials.

I cannot find any ratings on them, but thought they where a 4 ply...

My maxxis tires don't say radial, but they have a 3 star rating with each star representing 2 plys, therefore six plys.
