Winter Ice Studs

Hello everyone, So I have a brand new Sportsman with the stock Carlisle 489's. They appear to have 1/2" of tread. I want to use the stock steel wheels and 489's with Kold Kutter Screw in Studs for plowing and winter driving.

My question is, should i play it safe and use a 3/8" deep thread or should I go with 1/2" deep thread. Both use the same 1/4 head. I'm also looking at may'be buying 500 to do all 4 tires. I see some people going crazy with massive amounts of studs but what is conisdered overkill? I figures 125 studs per tire would be plenty?

I used 1/2" screws in my BigHorns; never lost one in two winters. They are not Kold Kutters though. I used ATV Pro Gold Ice Screws. I think 125 per tire would be good (although I used 220 per tire - I did all four and they are awesome - better than chains; and I ran chains in years past as well.

Your Big Horns have probably 1" of tread though so 1/2" screws don't puncture the inner tire ply's. Because I only have 1/2" of tread I'm leaning towards 3/8" Threads. Your bike must really grab on ice! That's alot of studs everywhere lol.

I'm thinking of running them on the center tread & outside center lugs.

Tires look good Phil!

Try it and see!! Sounds like sound thinking to me.

I thought about it too. I have my stock set of PTX tires I use for plowing and such. Might be a good candidate..
