Tire recommendations....
Looking to upgrade tires on my 2012 Sportsman 500 HO in the next month or so. Personally want to run the stock wheels as I will just end up scratching up a nice set of aluminums. With that being said what would be some tires to look at?
Stock tires are 25x8-12 on the front and 25x10-12 on the rear and I would like to go up to maybe a 26 or 27" tire. Don't want to go to large to where I am in need of a clutch kit or other mods. The quad does not have a lift kit and will not have one.
Let me know what my options are. Looked at Maxxis Big Horns or GBC Grim Reapers. I ride mostly hradpack trails and some intermitent mud but nothing extreme.
Thanks for any help provided,
Z

By not wanting to use a clutch kit, you have narrowed your choices to the 26" tires IMO. You may still need a different primary spring if you choose Bighorns or tires that will be heavier than your stockers (as most will be). I put a spring in mine when I put my Bighorns on.
Another thing to consider will be that most replacement tires is that about all of them will be wider on the front. In that case you may have to use small spacers(1/4-3/8") to have clearance from the tierod end.
That being said, my suggestion is the Bighorns at 26" tall.
Good luck!

I am running the GBC Dirt Commanders and my wife's bike has the GBC Grim Reapers. Both 8-ply so we dont need to be extremely worried about punctures and they ride awesome! The only reason we did not go with the BigHorns is because everyone we ride with has them and wanted to roll on something different. Overall we are very happy with these tires!

I agree with racer371 about going with 26" Bighorns. 26-9-12 front and 26-12-12 rear. As he said you will need wheel spacers or different wheels for clearance on the front. However, I don't think any clutch work will be needed. Run 26" BH's on the wifes '09 500 with no problems at all. Really can't beat the BH's for a great all around tire that is still reasonably priced. Tough 6 ply radial tire that rides better than OEM 2 & 3 ply tires. I've ridden some tough country and have never had a flat with the BH's. Great tires!

I am not opposed to clutch work as I have clutched my sleds in the past. What primary spring should I consider if I run the Bighorns in a 26" tire?

I'm amazed he picked Polaris machines. Any time he does a test on them, he always bad mouths and nit-picks them to death. Mostly it is the 4x4 system he claims to hate. I personally feel that it is the best out there.
Should be interesting to follow along.
