Poor quality Stock Tires???
I have read many posts about the poor quality of the stock tires but not sure I am seeing this. Bought my wife's 2011 850 Touring in Dec 11 and it came with Maxxis 6-ply (3 stars) tires. I get that the tread pattern is different, but what makes these tires inferior to other 6 ply tires on the market?

Welcome to the board!
3 ply tires would get eaten alive where I ride at. Need at least six to ensure you don't have a flat 100 miles from home on those longer excursions.
I got some GBC Grim Reapers in 2010. Over 1500 miles on them, not one flat and they still have at least 1000 miles of tread still left. My stock tires were done after 700 miles.

I'm kinda with you dronepilot.. I have the 2010 touring with 800km's and the stockers have been great so far.. Very smooth on packed trails and pavement, enough bite to get through some pretty nasty and very long sections of mud in northern ontario.. They've taken me over hair raising rock climbes with sharp jagged edges that made me nervous about a flat.. But they just keep going. Maybe you and I are just lucky!
Granted, the guys that have a bit more of an aggressive tread than my stock tires have been able to go places easier than me.. One of the guys has the grim reapers that smoothbassman mentioned and he loves them.. Aother guy has he GBC dirt devils and says they are the best all round tire he's tried yet..

Agreed. I think there is way too much machismo placed in the "my tires are better than yours" debate. Both my machines are on the carlisle pxt's that were stock for a few years. I have not found anything I couldn't get through or over, that my friends with their "better" tires could navigate. In fact, sometimes when they do get stuck, after I pull them out, I get through just fine.
In fact the pxt's on the '07 were getting worn some when I found some "tire afficianado" dumping his new pxt's so he could put on something "better." I snapped up his new pxt's and put them on the '07, moved the pxt's from the '07 to the '04 to finish wearing them out. When that happens I will put the stock tires back on the '04. (it was little used and even though they are 8 years old they are almost new.)

My stock tires really suck ass, they're all over the place. My buddies I ride with ask my multiple times "are you sure you aren't in 2 wheel drive?"

I agree a 3-ply tire would be inferior to a 6-ply, but the stock tire is a 6-ply...
How are the Grim Reapers on hard pack? I was wondering if the agressive tread made a for a bumpy ride?

If stock it is a 6ply, run them...I need to upgrade the ones on my 12' 500ho (I believe they are 3ply?). My buddy who has the same machine put a leak in his tire from a small thorn...a thorn!?

honestly... both atvs have stock tires...
they suit me for 90% of my needs...
the carlisles 489(?) i have on my x2 kinda "suck" in reverse...
and my terrathons do the job so far.... ice, highways (most of my riding really), hard trails, little to no mud....
never got stuck yet... did get stuck on my x2 but because it high centered....
wont change tires soon, but the ones on my x2 are slowly wearing out......

Ok here is my take on the stock Maxxis for the 550/850....they are ok for riding basic trails and general use.
As for where we ride here in WV....thats a whole new story...
The stocks would slip all over God's creation on anything that was slick and I mean a dry bone! Rocks they were horrible...couldn't even get traction on some mild climbs if you had to stop and start again.
We upgraded to the Grim Reapers for the 550 and WOW all around trails, rocks and even technical riding has been night and day...so to my wife and I the stocks are out with the trash this week!
