How do you break a bead on a tire with a bad rim? I want to take my rim in for repair and use it as a back up.

Does the tire need to have some air pressure still in it to break the bead?

Try??????????? Get a bit of rubber say a pushbike tube and a small piece of wood{Large enough to cover the hole but not to wide that it wont contour with the rim ) then use a small jack to clamp it {push it tight )on the rim
Hope this helps out

Yes without the propper tool for the job you must have air in the tire

here is a youtube of a tool specifically designed for braking beads on tyres
