I have thought much about the same topic. I won't go to 14's because of the stiffer ride. I too put many miles on in a days riding and ride quality is a top priority. The one thing I WILL have is a Radial tire. Now if your riding short distances a std bias tire may fit you perfectly as your saddle time is far less. also sporty riding where your on off and standing for periods of time the ride quality isn't as much of a concern.
Also width, I don't want mine wider either, but would like a alum rim for weight savings. Nothing out there!!!
I found a plethora of info on UTube! There are a couple guys posting videos on different tires. it FAR better than a snap shot in a catalogue. They do give there opinions of the tires, but you can see what they ride in and how they ride in some. I found it very helpful in choosing or at the very least narrowing the options.
If I was buying today, the GBC Spartacus or the Maxxis Big Horn with be my choices. Just remember the BigHorns run a bit larger than others of same size.
