Fast and tight quad. The powerband hits hard. I bought a new Scrambler 500. I don't ride this one anymore. Adult owned. I can take $200 off the price if you want to substitute a set of stock rims with good stock tires.

I'm curious how you like the new 500 versus your modified 400. I know it's nowhere near the same power....but is it overall more rideable? I guess the 500 probably has more torque down low, right?

I had a 500 in the past. Honestly I always thought the 400's had much more useable power. My 500 was a bit of a slouch even after I redone the clutches and put full exhaust and intake on. It still didn't seem to have the zip the old 400 did.

I guess you need to understand the trails I ride on. These trails are rough and hilly with not many areas you can really open it up on. When you are going up a hill as a 45 degree angle and trying to slowly crawl over rocks you really don't want something with a powerband that kicks in like this thing did.
My first scrambler was an 01 that was clutched and piped and it was a fun atv. I owned that thing for 8 year before I sold it because it started nickle and diming me to death.
Then I bought a new '08 Renegade 800X and it was fast in a straight line but a big heavy marshmellow in the curves. I really felt that thing was over-hyped and not as much fun to trail ride as a scrambler so I sold it.
I've always been more of a 2-stroke guy and I build high performance 6 cyl mercury outboards that push boats over 100mph so I wanted to try a 400 scrambler. When I got this one it hadn't ran for over a year and the compression was borderline so I decided to freshen up the top end with a bore and new piston. After getting it back and tuned out I discovered that it was more of an animal than I really wanted for trail riding. Is it faster than the 500? Absolutely. In fact I think it had more acceleration than my 800x did. This thing pulled like a freight train until the powerband flattened out and it was a hill climbing animal. I think it would have been great for running in some hare scrambles. It was just too radical for what I wanted to do with it and it wasn't worth dumping money into to detune it.
I just picked up a '99 400 scrambler for cheap that had a blown motor and it is all stock. I just completely rebuilt it from top to bottom and I am curious to see how different a stock one acts from the modded one I had. I almost have it back together and will start breaking it in this weekend. I like having a spare atv around for a friend to ride if someone ever wants to go with us or for my daughter to ride around the yard.

I bought this '05 that was literally used only one time by a 63 year old woman. Long story... But anyway it was completely stock and literally like showroom condition when I got it. I was able to get it for $2700 which to me was well worth the extra money for a machine like this. So far I just put on a winch, heated grips, and some aluminum wheels but that is probably all I will do to it.
