scrambler or sportsman

My brother is looking for a 4x4 Polaris ATV. Prefer a Scrambler, but also willing to look at a Sportsman or a Hawkeye. Must be AWD. Not to insult anybody, but look up your KBB and NADA of your machine before contacting me. We aren't looking to pay double what it is worth. $3000 is the budget. 2004ish Sportsman, 2005ish Scrambler and a 2006ish Hawkeye are all within the $2500-$3000 range. I live in Waterford, MI (45min north of Detroit) and he lives in Mio, MI (45min north of West Branch). Either area or in between will work, would be willing to travel slightly.

I saw a few in the classifieds here, but I really wish people would clean their machines up a little before trying to sell them...I can't tell what I'm buying when it is covered in mud.

No offense, but book values are worthless for pricing ATV's. You are better off looking at what they actually sell for on ebay or craigslist.

You are right in used being over priced, but then you won't get our money. That is why I mentioned it. Lets say the reliable life of a Scrambler is 10 years. At that point it is becoming more to keep it running than it is worth. At 5 years old your $5k machine is worth half.

I can get a left over 09 for $4500, I am not buying your used for $4k.

It does work in negotiation to know your numbers though. Had a used Scrambler and they wanted $4k, in half a day he said $2500 (which was just a touch over bluebook) and we had a deal. We passed for logistic reasons.
