Unhappy EPI sport utility clutch kit

I have a 2011 850 XP that my dealer installed a EPI WE437029 clutch kit.

It gave me a higher engagment, about 400 rpm. I have learned to get by with this. But really dont care for the higher engagment. my problem is the back shift. It is so harsh that it is like i jammed the brakes on when slowing down. On down hills i find myself being into the gas enough to keep it from back shifting and i have to be on the brakes to keep it slowed down.

Unless there is something that can be done with this I have no option but to remove the kit and go back to stock. I dont feel that i could let a unexperinced rider ride my atv. it is that bad. the only time i am ok with this harsh backshift is when i really dont want to go fast coming down a hill. on some of the big coal hills i dont mind being slowed down so much.

with the adc on coming down a hill in high range it would slow it me down to 4 mph in low it would be about 2. now with the kit it is 2 in high.

what can be done to make this better, a different spring? back to the stock springs? again the kit was installed by my dealer.
the stock parts i have, the springs are red with a white stripe.

any help you can give me would be great as i am not happy with this kit and riding now is a real pain, taking the enjoyment out of riding.

I have never had to use low range on the trail, and never had any belt slippage, but the price to pay for this is not worth it to me.

thanks,

Ken

After putting my 27" tires on my bike, the only thing I have changed in my clutch is the primary spring. I put a Dalton spring in the primary. This raised the engagement by 200 rpm. To me, this is about right. I would think EPI would have a spring that would match that one.

As for the aggressive backshifting, the spring in the secondary would appear to be too much. IMO

If I were you, I would give EPI a call to explain how the bike is reacting to the kit, let them know how you would like the clutch to work, and see if they have any suggestions.

I read the article and will give EPI a call in the morning to see what they can do to help. With the 2011 Xps it seems that the helix is fixed and you cant change them out unless you get a new secondary clutch. it seems to me that my problem is primarily there with the harsh down shift on deceleration. I will let you how the phone call goes.

of the 4 model years of the 850xp the 2011 has the best clutch setup and there is really no need to change it from stock. this is why dalton makes no kit for the 2011,it is good to go stock. the EPI was a waste of money,i would see if you can return it.

I agree with the waste of money part. I did see that Daulton didnt make a kit for it but didnt look into it. so in the end it cost me some money. it just figures that i decide to change a clutch on a bike that was good from the factory.....

i just got off the phone with EPI and was told to change the secondary back to stock. this will get my back shift back to stock...

called them back to return the kit and they want me to try a different secondary spring. EPI folks are good to work with. Told me to call back and let them know how it worked for me.

ken that 400 rpm higher engagement is way to high for a trail rider, that is for real big mud tires and big/deep mud holes. that higher rpm will cause strain on your drive train, like the small/cheap china made axles polaris started useing on the 2011.i would take the whole kit out and put it on ebay and take whatever you can get for it.

dalton told me they should have a kit for the 11 before the snow flies. they should have never touched the secondary because from the factory they are setup perfectly regardless of year of xp 850. dalton is the only way to go if you are clutching a sled or a quad. i still can't believe how hard mine pulls now.

with your kit the secondary was left alone?
should i even bother putting the new secondary spring in, just put the stock spring back in?
