I just bought a 2007 Outlaw 500 for my wife two weeks ago and the machine runs great!! She loves it and it had been forever since I had ridden a quad so I got bit by the bug! This afternoon I purchased a 2007 Predator 500 for myself for $500 with a dropped valve that I am going to build into a machine for myself! Anyway back to the Outlaw this evening I was getting ready to put it up for the night and was driving around the back of the garage and as I gave it gas it slowly died I thought it was weird, it fired right back up and I got on it and drove about 70 feet and it did the same thing just lost all power, crank, crank, crank.... nothing! would not fire up, cranks fine just would not run. I am going to check for spark and compression tomorrow, but I was wondering does the Outlaw have a fuel pump? I did notice something early when I had been riding the bike when I punched it almost felt sluggish but did not give it much thought. what should the compression be on the 500? Thanks and time to dig around the site!!!

So here is my story.

I picked this thing up for 30 bucks off of craigslist. the price seemed right for a running and moving machine. it didnt look TOO bad but i knew i was getting into a project and for 30 bucks? CMON!!!

first off was the rear end. the bearings were gone. electric start does not work and the recoil cover/recoil is screwed up. front rack is missing. seat is toast. plastics are there but faded. it did have 3 new tires tho... which was odd!

anyhow monkeying with the recoil you can start it but the cover cant be tightened all the way down or it rubs and wont retract. i replaced the bearings in the rear and all is good there. runs and rides. it sounds like one of the clutches are hitting the plastic cover tho. somethings fishy in there.

my major problem now that i got the rear fixed and i took it for a proper ride. the front suspension is GONE. front left shock is worn out and has a ratcheting effect. front left ball joint has a ton of play in it. front right shock upper mount let go and the shock was punching the fender.

so my question is. where can i get some shocks that will fit this thing for dirt cheap? and what about the ball joint? is it simple to replace?

last problem. no idea on year. only number i could find on it was 1729397.

I am wanting personal opinions on what four wheeler I should buy. A little bit of info to help is... I live in Fort Collins CO, and have a lot of trails up here, but I also have family and friends in Lyons CO. I would do a lot of riding there as well. I have friends that have told me that a 500-550 would be plenty of power for the trails that are in these areas, but what about an 800? Too much power? Waste of money?

I just would like peoples opinion of what four wheeler to get? A Polaris 500 H.O.? (altitude 5,000-8,000 ft, carbureted, jets??) Or 550 XP EFI? Or 800? I don't want to switch out jets, so I'm leaning towards an EFI model, but also don't to empty my bank account. Is EPS worth it? I cant justify buying EPS because I have rode so many without it, but is it that nice to have? Please help!

Ok so I have a really tough electrical problem I cant figure out. My quad runs good and reads a good battery and good charging when its running on the volt meter. But once I go out riding after an hour or two it will start jerking that's when i feel like the bumps are shorting something out because the jerking will happen in spurs they will happen and then the quad will run fine, sometimes it will die and i wait 15 min and then it starts up fine but usually it dies on the way home and when i try to fire it up it doesn't even make a sound.

I have no idea where to start on this problem besides to look at my electrical outlets and clean them.

Apparently, when I received this Sportsman (04 700 EFI) from my dad, maintenance had been neglected a bit more than I originally thought.

My list so far:
Thorough cleaning of everything.
Very thorough cleaning of the radiator, years of muck built up there.
Change air filter.
Clean Throttle Body.
Change T/BAP Harness to OTB Harness (broke wire on old one)
Change all fluids.
Change spark plugs.
Check Throttle Position Sensor.
Replace left rear wheel bearing.
Replace left rear outer CV Boot (and inner just because I was there anyway).
Replace entire front right axle (only CV was bad, but found a rebuilt axle for only a few dollars more than a CV).

Coming Soon:
Recheck TPS Sensor, I have a feeling it's going to be replaced.
Change out starter solenoid.
New Tires - If the ATV Gains my confidence after all this work.

It feels like if I keep going at this rate, pretty soon it will be more new than old. I've only had it at my house around a month or so.

I have a polaris 2500 winch I'll be installing soon. I got only the winch off ebay for a good price. So now, I need to find a contactor that will work for it. I do plan on installing a pure polaris remote kit on it as well. I have read reviews where people couldn't get the cheap ones off ebay to work, so it was best and easier to install the polaris one. I have also order a mount kit as well. Next thing to get as well is a front and back bumper. This is all going on a 2011 500 HO. Thank you for your time and help.
