Where ever I get a job. I am graduating. Might go back to washington state, where I am from, might go to colorado where I want to be, or anywhere else that a career might pop up.

We would like to visit the U.P this year. I am familiar with the area around Newberry and Grand Marais. There are some trails that take you back to dozens of little lakes. We plan on getting Michigan fishing licenses and wet some line. There are some breathtaking sights up that way.

When would be good time to visit the U.P. without being eaten alive by mosquitoes and black flies? The locals won't talk about it. The black flies and the white faced hornets drove us out of Keewanaw Peninsula in the summer/late summer time.

Heading up to the U.P. for our annual Memorial Day trip the end of May. Coming up from troll country so we'll make the traditional stop at Letho's for pasties on the way by then up near Pine Stump Junction for a few days. With any luck we'll get lots of riding in while there. I haven't been on my XP 550 since last May so I'm itching to go.

The black flies usually aren't bad in the spring as long as it isn't too warm. And I've heard they are gone toward the end of August into September but I've never been able to go up and see that for myself.

Michigan's U.P. Trip

That sounds like a hoot. That area is where I am wanting to explore on my machine. I have been all over on the two tracks and other trails in my 4X4 truck.

There is a lot to see and I am somewhat familiar with the area between Paradise and Munising, especially the Grand Marias area. There is a Campground called Woodland Park and it's operated by the township. Though it is right in town, you have a great view of Lake Superior from many sites. They also have several restaurants, gas station, grocery, and a hardware store, not to mention many places to stay besides the campground. They used to have a micro-brewery at the Dune's Saloon. It's nice to be able to walk home from the "Dune's" after pizza and adult beverages. There is an old restored Dining car and Rick, the owner and his wife puts out a really nice buffet.

When I spoke to the Alger County Sheriff's office last month, they told me to call them when we arrive and the Deputy who lives in town would be glad to come over and fill us in the best places to ride without being bothered by the Federal Rangers. Knowledge is power.
($5,000.00 Fine is worth my time to find out WHERE NOT TO RIDE!)

Please keep us posted so we can make plans to join you.

Mike

"what is the $5000 fine for?"
That is what I was told the fine is for riding on trails not marked for ATV/ORV use in the National Forest.
