Does anyone really feel that the 850 xp isn't powerful enough? These machines are already heavy enough. What could you possibly need more power for on a ATV. Forget about the pissing contest with CanAm. More power doesn't make for a more competent ATV. Not having oil in the air box is more important.

I agree! my 2011 850 has enough power I sure don't need the 2012 HO! I'm 46 yrs old and I would like to live a few more years!!! No oil as of yet but I still breaking the machine in. When and if I do get oil in the air box I'm going to take the PVC felt filter out and leave it out.

You can never have too much power...........When I drag my 1000 lb. bull elk out of a canyon the more power the better.

I decided since Can Am went with the 976cc and made the machine more Polaris like in ride, storage, anti dive and did one up in ps with a adjustable unit, I would try the Can AM Outlander 1000xt. Still happy with my Polaris but being in the buying mood Polaris did not come through. I pick my new Can Am next week. Still will have the popo and Brute but the Can Am will be getting my attention. Have to give Polaris props, Can Am copied a lot of what Polaris did good to make a more appealing machine.

With an even matched setup, the 800Rs would just walk all over the 850s in the testing we conducted right after the 850s first came out. I would say they are probably an even match now. But the 1000 will probably beat the 850 HO by an even wider margin. Not that it really would make a lot of difference, out on the trail. but it is fun to drag race your buddies for bragging rights.

FYI the Can am 800r has 67.05 hp, buddy raced one with his 2012 850 and beat him easily, he also raced a renegadw 800 and they were pretty even... due to the lighter weight I guess but the 800r never stood a chance. Polaris all the way!

The Polaris 850 non HO I seem to recall they claimed made 70hp when it came out, I dyno 2 of them and what made it to the ground was around 44 the Can-am 800R had a claimed 67 but what made it to the ground was closer to 50. Same dyno same type dyno street tires.
Big heavy tires can kill HP and clutch performance, rider weight, accessory weight, reaction time all those things play a major factors too, in who beats whom in a race.
