Outlaw 90 quits after a while
Hello,
We bought a 2007 outlaw 90 limited ed. a few years ago and found a problem I cant figure out. When riding on a warm day, it will die. We let it sit for a while and it will run again for a while. I have checked the fuel lines and they seem ok, nothing is pinching that I can see leaving me only one theory, the gas cap. The outlaw 90 gas cap has no vent in it and I cant find one anywhere else. Any ideas or a similar problem? I was also told crank case seals but that doesnt make sense to me since its a 4 stroke.

Hello,
We also have the 07 Outlaw and have had some similar issues. How does it idle when cold? How's the idle when warm? Do you know if it is dying when they are on the throttle or when they let off. I have noticed a very eratic idle when cold but seems to get a little better when up to full temp. It is sometimes hard for the kids to keep it running when cold. Seems fine when your on the throttle but often wants to die when you let off. Turning the engine idle up some seems to help but still has a very unstable idle. I am thinks about pulling the carb and cleaning. If it's not in the carb I don't know. Does anyone know if improper valve clearance could cause some of these issues we're seeing?
Thanks

It starts very hard anytime but the colder the temp the harder it is to keep running and I thought that was just the nature of the beast. The day it died a few times the temp was probably around 90 and we had been riding for a while, killed the battery trying to restart and after sitting for a while the kick starter fired it right up.

Sorry I can't offer much help. I can tell you that we have ran ours this winter when the temps were 15 - 20 degrees. Ran fairly well. I did turn the idle up some. It did want to die for a while. After running for some time it did get better. Both our 50 and 90 are the same as far as the kick starting goes. If they don't start with the electric start after just about killing the battery...a single kick and they will usually fire. If the batteries are week forget about the electric start. The starter uses enough juice to kill the ignition. You may want to look into the voltage when they are running and get the battery checked. You should see about 13 volts when they are running. If it's the origanal battery, replace it. These batteries are a fairly cheep.

we had the same problem ,found the vent line being pinched between the frame and fuel tank, also noted that if fuel cap is tightened too tight, the sleeve in the filler neck will restrict the vent at the tank filler neck,we repositioned the vent hose and have"t had a problem yet. i believe the fuel cap from a 525 outlay may fit giving you another vent, don't hold me to it.

Great. Thanks for the input. I just moved the quad from the trailer to the garage. I was getting ready to clean the carb. I will see if proper venting helps. I do recall some vent lines between the tank and the plastic. I will start with that.

dont know if your 90 has the same fuel petcock as the 50 but it has some sort of sediment trap built in it, my 50 had very litlle fuel coming from it, if i had the choke on it was fine, but after that you turn the choke of it would die,now it runs, idles, and scoots around pretty good now but its just a thought

Just a little info on what has really seemed to make this little 90 haul. For starters I adjusted the air/fuel screw and got the idle to become stable and no more stalling after hard decels. Next i noticed some hesitation during quick accels. I adjusted the needle up one clip and that really seemed to help. There are a few articles on the internet that go into great detail on these adjustment.
Hot Seat Performance has a few parts for the outlaw. I ordered the K&N filter which comes with #90 Main Jet. I also ordered the clutch kit which engages at 1500 RPM. All these parts where simple to do a really added some punch. I have not tried the #90 main yet. Stock is 82 and the jump to 90 may be a little large without adding a full exhaust. I only have a billet exhaust cap off ebay which does open the exhaust up a little but not like a full exhaust.
To top it off we put some wheel spacers on this bike. Can't wait to get it out on the trail if give it a spin.
There was a reply from desertrat where he brought up the vent hose on the tank. Yes, this hose was slightly colapsed from the plastic but even better the hose was busted open where it connects to the tank. Thanks for directing my attention towards this issue.
