2006 outlaw wont start when cold but will start when warm.

Got my friend to buy an 06 outlaw for a good price after he sold me his 06 predator. He also bought a can am renegade to yank all of us out of the mud when we get stuck also. The problem he is having is that he cant start the atv off of the battery when cold but we can jump start it cold. After it has warmed up a bit it starts up off of the battery fine after riding it for a bit. His brther was saying that the valves have to be re adjusted. Is this correct. He doesnt quit know atv motors perfect but is a bike mechanic for Harley Davidson. Thanks Ken

If it is a ktm 450 or 525. I would be willing to say that i am 90% sure it needs the valves adjusted. I have had several RFS KTM bikes hard or slow start ups was the first sign of needing the valves adjusted esp. cold. search for KTM RFS valve adjustment video on you tube. takes about 10 min on a bike. Hope this helps.

Yeah I agree. My brother’s scrambler always started up fine then all at once it did not want to start. Once we adjusted the valves it had fired up great ever since. My outlaw always starts fairly well. It starts a little hard when it is cold and it has been sitting for a while. If you battery is fine I would check out the valve clearance and start there. Let me know how much work it is if you adjust your valves incase I ever have to do it. I wish outlaws have hydraulic valves like the newer sportsmans do. Also if the values are too tight you might not hear noise when it is running but if they are loose you should hear a little more engine noise but if you just bought it, it will be hard to tell if it is louder than normal.

The KTM RFS motors need a Valve adjustment about every 20 hrs. That sounds like it sucks but it was easier to do than the new models. The new models use shims. They dont have to have them adjusted as often but you have to all the possible shim combos in hand to do the job. The new models take about a half hour to do too. The older RFS motor didnt require anything except for a couple of .50C gaskets. and only takes about ten min. The upside to the new motor is they have needed zero adjustment for the last 125hrs. I check them to see and they havent moved since the first adjustment at 25hrs.
