Outlaw 90 Starter Problem
Hey everyone. I'm working on my father n laws 08 outlaw 90. The problem with it is that when you use the electric start, it sounds like the bendix is not engaging. Upon tear down I found that the starter doesn't have a typical bendix, but instead is connected to an idler gear, which turns a larger gear mounted on the crank, behind the primary clutch. When the starter is activated everything seems to turn normally, but it will not grab and actually turn the engine over. Has anybody messed with one of these? If you look at the parts breakdown on one, it seems like the most logical thing for me to do is replace the wheel starter assembly, as every thing else seems to work as designed. Maybe its worn to the point that it cant grab what is supposed to grab. Anyhow, ideas a certainly appreciated.
heres a video of what its doing. you can see how the set up is. the starter actually being the very small gear at the top. there towards the end it looks like its turning over, but its just rocking back and fourth on the compression stroke. thanks.

90 Outlaw Starter issues
Justin,
I am having the same issue with my daughters Outlaw 90. Did you ever figure out exactly what was happening with the starter gear/wheel and why it was not engaging? Did you replace a part?
Also, your video was fanatastic....it really helped me get a visual on what was going on.
Thanks,
John

My daughter's 2008 predator 90 is making the same noise while using the electric start. When you kick start it, it starts easily. I chaulked it up to her riding through some deep mud. These machines do not like mud. Thanks for the video.

yes #6 on the parts list is what your going to need to check but most likely that is why its just grinding and will need replaced.

I am trying to find starter on a 06 90. What do you have to take off to get at the starter?
