Metal "flakes" in oil

Just bought an 08' outlaw 525's. Changed the oil in it and noticed a lot of "flakes" on the screens (mostly on the bottom screen) and a lot of shavings on the drain plug. Is this fairly common? I should have taken a pic but my hands were filthy and I didn't want it all over my iphone. I didn't notice anything in either filter but like I said, a lot in the screens and plug. Should I be worried or is this normal?

I dont have a answer to your question but I had the same experience. I just got a used 08 a little while back. I changed the oil when I got it and it had alot on the drain plug. Its time to change the oil again. I hope to not see that again. I dont know how often the original owner changed the oil. I will report back later this week.

Run it for a little bit with the new oil and drain it again. Do this a few times if need be and see if this flushes it out. If it continues......you'll probably need a rebuild.

me or the OP? If me, I am not sure. I have had mine a couple of months. I changed the oil when I first got it from the original owner. I have put about 15 hrs on it. When I got it the machine was in real good shape. It looked like it got a lot of action on asphalt from the wear on the tires.
