Engine Questions

I just got an 04 Pred 500 from a friend who stopped riding it because he was not able to get it to start unless he pull started it. Anyways I decided I was going to tear it apart and powder coat it. Long story short I pulled the motor apart and noticed that the piston and valves looked very burnt. I do not know if this is the way they are supposed to look after a few years of riding or if this might be one of the reasons why it would not start in the first place. There are no scratches or markings indicating that they are hitting. Any help as to what might cause this and if they need to be replaced would be appreciated. And the quad is totally stock.

When trying to use the electric start you can hear it turning over and there is spark but it will not run. But if we either push start or pull start it will run but if you let off of the gas it would die. It has a new spark plug and battery.

Probably valves out of adjustment, Preds are bad about that....could also be the reason for the lean condition.
