starter solenoid

just got an 03 predator someone hacked the wireing and put a universal solenoid off like a truck or something. lol but i replaced the whole wiring harness and bought a used solenoid off ebay. my question is... is there suppost to be power comming out of the 2 wires that are comming out of the solenoid i used a test light and there isnt. and i know it has power from the battery because i can jump the battery to the starter wire and it will turn over.

There should be power in those wires only when the start button is pressed on the handle bar. One wire is a ground, the other is just a standard 12v power source running through the start button.

Since the battery side of solenoid is always hot, those wires can only be hot when trying to start it, otherwise the starter would be running all the time.

I dont think its the solenoid. I dont think this new one is going to fix it.

If you are not getting power to the solenoid from the start button when you press it, then of course it doesnt matter what solenoid you put in, it isnt going to work. You need to start tracing wires. Can you turn the headlights on and such when you turn the key on.
