Bent Valves

Hi all! Well I got my garage sale special to the shop today and come to find out the cams were out of time. I popped the head off and all 4 valves are bent. The cam chain looks good but, the bolt in the back of the tensioner is missing. Do these engines have tensioner isses? Does anyone make a manual cam chain tensioner for these? I bought one for my DRZ400 recently.

no real issues. the bolt in the back is just a plug. its not actually any part that would effect your chain tension. i would guess someone adjusted the valves and had no idea how to time the fuji motor. 1 tooth either way is all it takes on these motors. As for the cam chain you cant really check it by looking at it. theres a page in the service manual that tells you how to measure it to see if its good or bad. real easy way to check it tho is to see how far the tensioner goes in before in stops trying to tighten the chain. if you put a very small flat head screw driver in the tensioner you can back it up but you have to hold it until you have it bolted back in the motor.
To be honest with you tho your luck to get the motor tore down with only bent valves and not have any broke up and smashed into the head and into the piston as well. Get a service manual before putting the motor back together to save you more money and time.

Thanks for the input. I guess a little luck is better than none, I was hoping for juat a dead battery and a dirty carb! Piston and rod look to be in good shape, the tensioner does not compress so I guess it's ok. Just picked up an 05 shop manual from an ad on Craigslist. It looks like a small key is used to hold the tensioner retracted for instalation. Anyone have a pattern for this?

Ok, I got a manual and I found the section on measuring the chain to see if it's stretched. It states "strectch the chain tight on a flat surface and apply a 10lb load. Measure the length os a 20 pitch section. Replace if worn past service limit." Service limit is 5.407" or 13.7cm. My question is what is pitch, is it the distance between the roller pins? Or, is it the length on a link plate? If it's the pins my chain is good if it's the plates it's not/

Thanks Josh, if that is the case then my chain is OK. But, what makes them jump time? Over revving?
