My 04 Ram hemi has its oil changed every 3000. I will run a quart or two of trans fluid in the crank case every once in a while to clean it out. I know there is very little if any sludge in that engine. I just recently had an exhaust gas analyzer on it to see what kind of numbers it produced. Now I have worked for dealers for some time now, and have yet to see an engine run as efficient as mine according to the analyzer (thanks to intake/exhaust upgrades, premium fuel, and engine tuning software). My engine oil comes out very dark in color at the end of every oil change. It is NOT because of a inefficient running engine. valvoline engine oil is a very clean oil, it goes in almost clear yet comes out dark. I would say it has alot to do with the way i drive it, dirt from the air intake, and fuel contaminants. One thing i will agree with him on is blow by gasses. The new bluetech Cummins turbo diesel is one of the most efficient running diesel engine out there. far superior to any gasoline engine. oil is changed every 5 to 7500 miles and comes out jet black. This comes from the soot carried by blow by gas in the combustion chamber, NOT inefficiency. keep in mind a diesel has much higher combustion pressures than a gas engine. Our engines will not have this condition unless the cylinders are worn. Enough with the tech talk for now. intervals depend on your driving/riding habits. as said before oil technologies have improved drastically. as long as condensation is controlled I change mine once a year on my atv and have never had a problem. The only reason i change mine every 3000 in the truck is for warranty purposes (other words i beat the hell out of it, and need documentation)
