2000 Scrambler Drive Belt Adjustments?

Hey all
I've got a 2000 Scrambler 500 4X4 that I picked up last fall. It starts and runs great but the other day the drive belt was slipping. It happened when I was driving through a puddle about 8" deep. Once I got out of the puddle, it seemed to go back to normal.

I wasn't sure if water got into the case or what but when I took it apart tonight, it was completely dry. The previous owner had installed a new belt and it looks new.

Since this is my first Scrambler I don't have much experience with it (I have owned 4 Honda XR's before the ATV). It seems like the belt is loose because I can turn it by hand pretty easily. I also noticed that the belt seems to have a fair amount of play between the 2 clutch plates. It's hard to tell in these photos but I bet there's 1/8" of play in there:

Is this normal? If not, what should I do to get rid of the play?

Thanks!
Doug

k i have had the same thing happen to me and i had a brand new belt on it. it was water in the case and right after i went and pulled it off and there was no water either but i think the engine heat dried it out and the clutch slinged the water off of itself

Case seal is letting in water. The case warps over years and the seal cant keep out the water. You could replace the seal but the problem could still be there due to the warped case. As for the gap dont remember, I havent had my case off for a year.
