Well you have lots of things to check. How long has it been sitting. How fresh is the gas? What kind of compression do you have. I have a 96 with same problem. It needs a rebuild. Crank bearings are bad and it starts to suck through the seals when it gets warm and shuts down. Just rebuilt one of my trailblazers for same problem.

Change out that fuel filter, tank vents and check the spark plug and air filter too.
Then get yourself some Seafoam and foam it baby!!

As few as a couple tanks makes quite a difference to a neglected carburetor!

ONe thing is for certain. You don't want to run your machine without a battery. Your cooling fan runs off your battery. if it gets hot and can't cool itself it will shut off and once its cooled down you can start it back up again.
Another thing is your carb. Take it down, clean all your primary holes and be sure to clean the bowl. A brown tinted slush forms and clogs everything. Lastly delete your oil pump and mix your own gas. its more accurate that way and it can save you from burning up your engine
