Just got a rebuilt engine that the seller said was seized. spent a little time with it before i bought it and got it to spin, so i took it home... $160 for engine (bored 40 over 2 hrs on rebuild) cvt clutch, inner & outer belt cover, and fuel selector assembly. i think i did good considering the cvt is more than what i spent alone.
ANYWAYS, i tracked the problem down to the bendix. was sticking in the open position and the starter was locked up. Removed starter and bendix and it pulled easy from the pull start. After i threw the engine in I noticed it was getting harder and harder to pull with each yank, until finally i couldn't budge it any more. Pulled the spark plug, no change. pulled the carb and reeds, no change. spun the motor backwards with a wrench on the flywheel nut until it was smooth, then i could pull on the pull start about 8-10 more times before she was stuck again. Finally i pulled the balancer oil dipstick and not only was it bone dry, but the dipstick was rusty.......
not knowing what oil it needed, i added 10/40 just to see if that would free it up and fix the immediate problem but no such luck. I also noticed the oil i just added was leaking from the oil injection assembly where the throttle cable goes into it.
Has anyone seen a problem like this? I'm assuming it's the balancer thats screwed up? Any insight would be helpful, the more time and money i throw into this thing the more ticked off i get.
