Newbie here with a question...

Hey guys/gals seems like a great site!! I've searched and can't come up with anything so thought I'd post a question..

Just bought a 1995 scrambler 4x4 400 and it ran absolutely awesome for 2 days and then she quit. Turned it over and over all of a sudden she fired again took off went a half mile and shut off again. Tried it and wouldn't start sat there for awhile and she started drove it home and could hear gurgling in the tank. Someone said to drill a hole in gas cap to relieve some pressure and you're good to go. While it sat I fixed the non working headlights if that makes a difference. Drilled the gas cap and she ran great for a whole tank of fuel(half day what can I say the kids and I can't get enough) and shut off because we thought it ran out of fuel. Filled it up took it for 3 miles ran great then poof shut off. Let it sit for 2 hours(was 90's today) went tried to start and didn't start until I feathered the gas and had to feather it for the 1/2 mile home.
Took carb off, pulled bowl off and sprayed the heck out of it with carb cleaner. Put that back together and on then pulled spark plug and cleaned it.
Threw everything back together started it and it really runs like crap. Drove it around hoping it would clean out and wow she started crack'n like a fire cracker. Absolutely no power at all. Shut it off and this is where I sit now.

Please give me a direction this thing ran absolutely perfect with tons of power.

It could be a multiple of things maybe some simple like a bad plug not giving off enough spark. Gap could be off on the plug. Carb. Could be plugged. Is there a fuel filter inline or mounted in the bottom of the gas tank that is plugged. If some one before you rejetted the Carb you have to take the air cleaner lid off that's what happened to me on my ltz 400. will it run if the choke is pulled out some or all the way. Bad gas.

The only filter I saw was on the petcock. I removed the whole petcock and there was a small screen on the regular gas and one on the reserve. They looked clean. The choke is the flip up kind and it didn't seem to make a difference but I will try both the air cleaner lid and partial choke in the morning.
Thanks for the ideas

I'll also pull the plug and close the gap a little I did increase it a touch trying to get a bigger spark. It was only a tiny bit but you never know. The plug was very grey??? Can't say I've ever seen that color before on a plug. Not white or brown whatsoever...

How do the fuel lines look maybe you have a pin hole in one or its a little weathered allowing to suck air. Or check to make sure your choke is operating correctly and not sticking in any way you no like choke shows off but its partially closed.

Can I just pull the choke out of that hole and try without anything in that hole on the carb??? Maybe I put the choke line back in wrong and it's flooding it out?

New gas line is a good idea.
So list is spark plug and new gas line

If you really wanted to pull it apart you could but you should only have to watch the movment of the choke in the Carb. Now you say it may be flooding does it have a strong smell of gas or is gas running out of the carb. If so maybe your float is stuck or could have a hole in it allowing it fill with gas and not float. Causing your Carb. To constantly fill with gas. If you can pull the bowl off the bottom of the Carb exposing the float (with the Carb still on the.bike) turn on the gas. Gas should flow out but if you lift up on the float the flow of gas should stop. Remember to.check and see if the float feels heavy like it filled with gas.indicating a.hole in the float.

Okay went out and tried the half choke and woohoo huge backfire. So before wrecking anything else I went ahead and checked for spark. Would give one big blue hit and then nothing. Moved the wire around and nothing at all then all of a sudden a spark. Had a decent ground so that should have not been the problem.
Went ahead and pulled the coil and low and behold huge wear spot where the last owner had taped it up. I'm guessing that's the culprit(I hope!!!).
Now should I buy an aftermarket coil and cdi?? Replace both incase it's either or? Where is a good one to buy and is it worth the aftermarket or is stock plenty good? I always want more power so that's not a question LOL..

I won't order until I hear something from you guys..
