2004 scrambler 500 4x4 chain guide? do i need it?
hey guys iam new to the forum and alson new to the polaris line of quads. I bought a 2004 polaris scrambler 500 4x4 and after riding it for two weeks i broke the chain coming of a jump. Well after 50$ and 4 hours and alot of lol i finally got the new chain on. So heres my questions while putting the new chain on the bolt holding the big chain guide on the bottom striped so i had to cut it off and ended up cutting the chain guard in the process. Has anyone taken this guard off and left it off ???? i dont really see the point in having it?? any feed back would be great and ANYONE OUT THERE WITH ANY POLARIS SCRAMBLER AFTER MARKET PARTS (WINCH,BUMPERS,RACKS ETC..) THEY WANNA GET RID OF HIT ME UP.
Thanks,
John

All you needed to do was, link the new chain into the old, and spin tires while off ground. And new chain would of feed right through. I was told to replace both sprockets when changin chain? My kit was $67.99 http://www.forwardpowersports.com/Pr...t%2c-1336.aspx Now your chain guard is under $20.00 I'd replace it, if I was you. Polaris OEM Parts: GUARD,CHAIN,R.AXLE - Cheap Cycle Parts

I would, because as the suspension goes through its range of motion, the chain gets looser. The guide helps keeps the chain in line right at the sprocket, so the teeth line up with the chain just right. Without that guide, the chain could basically, come off while moving. Worst case senerio is it could break the sprocket(s) teeth, and possible crack your engine case. Best case senerio is the chain comes off, and you have to tow or push it home, buy a new master line, grind out the old links pin, punch that out, reinstall your chain, and then install the new master link again.

The sprockets are not to bad to change. The front one is just held on with a snap ring! I would look yours over real good, check for cups, or worn spots in between the teeth. They may be okay, and if tight on cash you can just spin the rear sprocket around. The tension on the chain is what I’m not sure of. Easy to adjust, but some say to use a tie down and ratchet suspension down till both sprockets are level. While other’s say to adjust chain slack with the riders weight on the unit. I use the riders weight, cause when I tried the other method, and released strap the chain was so loose it wasn’t funny. Heres a couple of pictures of my pretty red chain and sprocket install from, ATV Parts, Motorcycle Parts, Sport Bike Parts, Snowmobile Parts, MX Offroad - Forward PowerSports
