engaging AWD while stopped/moving

i have a 97' scrambler 500 4x4 which has the older engagement system than the newer ones (if there is even a difference) can i engage AWD while i'm moving or do i need to be stopped? also, does the older system have the "wheel slipping only" engagement or is it once you have AWD engaged its always engaged?

Morning,
I cannot say for sure if its safe or not. (Altho I suspect it is OK.) What I will say is its not a good idea to switch it if the wheels are spinning! Thats a good way to require extensive rebuild of your drive line...

If you don't have the manual, down load one and I'm sure the correct information is in there.

I know this post is old but I just want to clear this up in case anyone else was wondering about this... Below is direct quote from the owner's manual for a 2000 Polaris:

The Demand 4 Drive switch may be turned on or off while the vehicle is moving.
If the switch is turned off when the front hubs are driving they will not release until
the rear wheels regain traction.
CAUTION: Do not switch on Demand 4 Drive if the rear wheels are spinning. This
may cause severe drive shaft and clutch damage. Engage the Demand 4 Drive
switch before getting into conditions where front wheel drivemay be needed. If the
rear wheels are spinning, release the throttle before turning the Demand 4 Drive
switch on.
