2001 polaris scrambler 500 4x4 not working

I have a 2001 Scrambler 500 4X4. We are trying to fix the 4X4 system because it does not work at all. We took apart the right (when sitting on the quad) front hub and this is what we found. If you look at the pictures there is a chunk out of the strut. Will this be a problem if we replace the coil/ wiring? OR do I need a whole new strut?

My fear is that the gear oil will get up inside the coil/ wiring and eventually break it down. Should I be worried about this? Is there a way to repair this chunk?

Advice, help, comments... Anything would be greatly appreciated.

find you another strut! that one looks like its been to hell and back!
you can get a new one for $80. at partshark.com

The part is $236 on partshark.... What were you looking at? I need the whole hubstrut, not just the outer coil.

Please let me know, if you could save me $150 I would be thrilled! I need the right one, and as of right now there are none used on ebay. I checked the part number for specific years, models etc... NOTHING
