I think my 4x4 is ruined... :(

So i haven't rode my quad in about a month, went out yesterday and got stuck a little, so i threw it in 4x4, noticed i still wasn't going anywhere then all of a sudden a tonne of smoke was coming from the seat area... Don't know what the hell happened. So i got it out and drove it in 2 wheel and didn't have any issues... I tried lifting the back end while giving it gas to see if the front wheels would go at all and they wouldn't, and it seemed like if i revved high enough i would hear a clunking (only tried this once). Im assuming my whole 4x4 assembly is done?
One other thing I noticed is that when I am trying to take off from a stop slowly (in 2 wheel), it like bucks a bit until i get going... feels like a little tug, could this be because the chain is too tight?
Btw, I have a 2000 400 4x4 Scrambler, and I do not have a light on the quad that indicates if it is in 4x4 or not, don't know why mine doesn't have it, my brothers 1996 has it.

The 4x4 engages based off of rpm's I believe. Put it on jack stands with all 4 wheels off the ground to see if they pull.

Smoke followed by weird jerking usually means belt. Agree that you should jack it up and retest the 4WD but after you address the probable belt issue as to not muddy the waters.

Ok ill have to check it out on the weekend. Anyone have a part number for the belt? Sorry, I'm new to all this, the belt should be located on the left side if sitting on the quad right? under the black plastic.

Yep agreed smoked belt....I did this in wet grass trying to slide out the back tires...not a ton of smoke...but enough to "hour glass" the belt. It would feel like it was starting and stopping real quick and i never even tried to get it to the high rpms in fear or fubaring something else. Took it to a dealer and $170 later it rode fine.

On a furture not...if you are riding and giving it gas and the wheels are not spinning then you will possibly do the same again
