Scrambler 500 or 400?
I will soon be buying a scrambler and I have the option of a 400 2 stroke or the 500 4 stroke. I havent ridden the 400 very much but I really liked the 500's. I looked in the purchasing and price forum but didnt find anything. If it were you guys buying it which one would you get? They are both around the 2000's and are from the same owner and have been well maintined. I will be doing a lot of riding in the rocky mountains of Canada which means lots of hills and mudd.
Any thoughts or advice would be great! Thanks!

500 is more reliable, 400 is faster, and easier to work on. There are kits you can order now for 400's that give them like 85hp... Not bad at all.
But they are picky machines, you gotta mess with them to run right. But when you do it's rewarding. But if you don't feel like getting your hands dirty and would rather ride (I work as a mechanic so when I get home I don't want to keep wrenching) then get the 500. A 500 is BULLETPROOF

I would like to say that if you are in mud, a 4 stroke would probably be a better choice. The 2 has more power, but for some reason they don't run right when they are in water or mud

What is the stock HP specs on the 400 and 500? I also heard some of the older ones are chain driven to the front axle. Are the older or newer ones better?

WELCOME!
Don't get caught up in HP numbers...
They may look impressive on paper but are not as important in reality. Comparing them across platforms like a 2stroke VS a 4stroke is pointless.
The RPM range on a 2stroke is much higher as its got less moving parts. The 4stroke is better for lo RPM applications.
The 2stroke is Tailor made for wide open flat out speed applications like sno machines (Riding ice and frozen lakes)and sand dunes. the 4 makes decent power but accells at lo RPM and slower speeds.

I've personally never had a problem with, but have never been a fan of 2 strokes in anything. I have always had 4 strokes and just like the durability and they just seem to run better, especially for someone who is going to be doing the style of riding you are.
