Take a jack and check it out with the wheels off the ground You will find things that you will not notice with the weight off. Looks like you know about the 400 counterbalance oil dipstick tan oil means bottom end rebuild. The 500 is a great motor but likes to eat cams if the oil is not kept up with.
Good luck your welcome to call me while your lookin at one ill help over the phone.

The grey oil was on a 500. Dumb mechanic who owned it tried to mAke up stories. Whats this dipstick on the 400's?

On the 400 2stroke the water pump seals are bad about failing There is a small dip stick under the carb on the back side of the motor its not easy to get to but if the dip stick is rusty or the oil is tan or none it will need to be rebuilt.. The other issue I have seen is broken piston skirts theres no way to know unless you remove the intake boot to see if the back of the piston is cracked.
Look at it good and buy cheap.... Good luck.

Consider the price the owner is asking for the scrambler and decide how much work and/or money you are willing to put into it to fix it. Then check the overall condition of the quad and make sure that it will not nickle and dime you to death. Start with obvious things like the seat cover, plastics, handlebars and tires. Check the radiator to make sure it is in good shape. Check the bearings and bushings all over the quad. Grab the wheels and try to wiggle them checking for play. Check for play in the steering stem. You can check how thick or thin the rear brake pads are easily without taking anything apart. Take the seat off and look at the air filter. Does the filter look like it has been cleaned or was the PO negligent of maintenance? Look at the chain and sprocket and check the suspension for oil leaks. CV axles can be expensive so check the front drive shafts for play. Also take notice of what shape the CV boots are in. If you are able to jack the bike up in the air, grab the rear axle and try to wiggle the swing arm back and forth checking for play. Also check that the AWD is engaging and disengaging while all 4 wheels are in the air. If you find problems during your inspection take into consideration that you'll have to fix them and offer the seller less due to you having to fix the issue/issues.

Any issues specificly with the 400 2 stroke. I want to buy one locally cheap. He says it keeps locking up and if I can get it cheap enough I'll buy it and rebuild it.
