2001 Scrambler 500 4x4 front hub ?

Hey guys,

I had a little issue with my 2001 Scrambler 500 4x4. I installed a new CV boot the other day. Everything went fine. I looked up the torque specs for the axle nut. My haynes manual called for 100 lb. I didnt think that was right. I torqued it to 100 lbs and it wouldnt turn at all, that much torque had it locked down. So, I backed it off until it felt right, fairly snug, with no wobble or play in it. I got it all put back together and when I test drove it, it was pulling hard to the right, like one wheel was in 4wd. It had me puzzled, I drove around, did a few dough nuts and it felt like it released, it wasnt pulling to one side any more. Is it possible that the front wheel was in 4wd and it released on it own after driving it a little. I also drained and added the Polaris reccommended hub fluid to both sides. So, it has the proper amount and type of hub fluid in it.... Anybody ever heard of this or know anything about it, this is my 1st polaris product..
THANKS

Yeah,
it probably unlocks like some automobile 4x4 systems.....I know some vehicles dont unlock until u drive in reverse a little bit.

I changed all the fluids just recently, mainly cause I just bought it used and I didnt know how old all the fluids were or if they had water in them. I usually do that when buying something used.

thanks 4 the reply

The manual says to go to 140in lbs while turning the hub, to seat the bearings, then back off to the closest opening for the castle nut. My 500 does that too sometimes when i service the hubs. I always putt around on it for a little bit after doing any kind of service on my quad.

This also may help

mine does it also. after a few feet of riding, it's releases. i'm sure it's just the design of the hubs, nothing to worry about.

If you overtighten the hub nut it will cause the front end to stay in 4x4 all the time. Most people do not have a torque wrench so the best way I was told by a Polaris mechanic is to hand tighten the nut, spin the wheel a few times, hand tighten the nut again, spin the wheel a few more times, hand tighten the nut once again and back off to the nearest cotter pin hole. Keep in mind, if you run your quad in 4x4 more than it should or have the back tires spinning faster than the front tires engaging the AWD in and out this will magnetize the armature plates causing the front end to stay in 4x4

You torqued the nut to 100 ft-lb. That is 12 times more than the correct troque of 100 in-lb. Mind the units.
