Scrambler 500 electric start problems

I just got a 2001 scrambler 500 2x4 it ran and started great when i got it but now it has a starting problem. When i go to start it with the electric start all i get is just one click coming from the battery area every time i press the button. lights and everything else works but it just doesnt turn over. after awahile of running i can start it with the electric start but the next day ill go to start it but i just get that clicking noise. What should i look into first?

Battery is bad or not charging, should have 12,3 or more volts shut off and 13.5-14.5 when revved up a little, check with multi meter at battery.

I put a new battery in it yesterday still had to pull start it (didnt charge it before putting it in) and i ran it hard for a good hour. I tested the battery when it was running and it held a constant 14 volts so its charging and it was able to start after the ride fine. I will try starting it later today and see if the battery was all it needed. Thanks for the info.

Should always charge new battery before use. Clean all your connections on the solenoid and starter connection.

Well it seems like its more than the battery now. The new battery only lasted a few months. It was working fine one day but the next mourning i went to go start it and it was completely dead. I went and got a new battery and PROPERLY CHARGED IT like it tells you and still having the same problems. I went through all the points and cleaned them and even tried the battery in other machines and it works but every time i go to start it, it either slowly cranks then stop or not even turn. opened up the side of the motor and cleaned up the magneto since it was rusted up and gave the starter a couple of taps. It would crank then stop and when it did crank its loud and has a grinding sound in it. Before i go and buy a new one, i wanted to see if theres anything else i should look at? It feels like its drawing way more power than it suppose to when it cranks and kills the battery faster.
