Pinion cover fail...2017 with less than 21 hours

Unfortunately the failure hit me which was shocking. I ride trails, and enjoy the performance of the 1000, but don't think I actually beat on it hard in comparison to hard core riders. But I knew the weak link was that front pinion cover when I bought it.

I purchased the billet aluminum cover and brought my machine in for the first service and have the new cover installed. Of course they found the cracked cover and some leakage. Basically, if you ride it in 2 wheel drive and drift, or spin the tires, the front drive engages and the cover is the weak point and fails to contain the action. My internals where safe.

Thankfully the dealer was great. Repaired under warranty and they put the aftermarket cover on as part of the job.

Now I have to worry about it happening again. The cover should help a lot, but my service manager also let me know it shifts the weak point to the internals as far as he knows. I am not a mechanic, so I am not sure exactly what can happen. But knowing I have a machine that can fail again, and sort of easily, shakes my confidence. In might be difficult to have the repair done again under warranty if it happens again. Not something I would appreciate. But my dealer would likely battle for me.

The builder of the cover said to just ride, don't worry. I will use AWD more often now as this helps but it also takes away from my ability to powerslide/drift a bit on the trail...the most fun part of the ride.

Still love the comfort of the machne and the power, but it will take awhile to feel confident about the front end.

Wow that's crazy. I was thinking about getting one too as I'm pretty hard on the throttle on mine. Thanks for sharing.

This all happened riding the trails around Baldwin, MI. No mudding etc. I thought the front end would fail if I were doing donuts on ice or shredding mud etc. Basically I am high speed trail riding and crack the throttle to get the machine to kickout around corners. Still stunned a bit by what happened but, it is fixed so roll on. But....will worry now.

Get the billet cover, I think it will help a lot.

Oh really? Those are the trails we ride too! I know exactly what your talking about. You have to power slide in the corners to kick out the back end. I'll send you a PM.

That's weird, it won't let me send you a PM. Maybe your account is too new. You could try sending me one...

The next weak link is the Hilliard clutch, but fortunately I think there is a pretty large step between the two. I don't think you'll blow the hilliard doing slide outs on corners since the front wheels are moving at a fairly matched speed, but donuts will likely kill it if/when it engages on it's own.

I use my AWD probably 60% of the time when i ride. I upgraded to the HD ATV gear pinion as soon as i bought it (Dec 2016) and just noticed a little leak around the seal. Not to uncommon since i bury this thing in the mud/sand every chance i get. Just service your Diff often and you should be fine.

I have just ordered my 2017 XP 1000 and waiting on delivery. After reading all the posts i am concerned about the pinion cover cracking/exploding and i haven't even seen or sat on it yet.
After spending this kind of cash, you think Polaris would at least offer a discount on the upgraded cover or a replacement.
- what is the best aftermarket cover to buy? (Canada)
- Are there any Polaris Dealers on here, that are making this known to Head office.
Thanks

Not sure on the 17's but i know a recall was issued for the later models. HD atv gear is based out of Canada and is pretty helpful. He has a pinion plate specifically built for your machine too.

Cecco has the best fitting cover and I'd also recommend his a-arm braces for peace of mind.
