I just purchased a Garmin Montana 680 GPS on Craigslist to install on my 2007 Polaris Sportsman 500. I ordered the Garmin AMPS power cradle, Garmin anti-glare screen protector, and several RAM mounts from Amazon.

I plan to direct wire the GPS on the Sportsman 500. Based on several threads on this forum, there are several orange/white accessory wires specifically for this under the front cover or in the pod. So, the red wire from the Garmin AMPS power cradle would go to the orange/white strip accessory wire on the Sportsman 500, and the black wire from the Garmin AMPS power cradle would go to a ground terminal block on the Sportsman 500 (not sure where).

For maps, I purchased the vvmapping maps already and plan to install the vvmapping and BOBT maps on the GPS. Should I install a topographic map as well? If yes, which one?

Additionally, are there any special settings to configure on the Garmin Montana 680 for ATV trail riding? I welcome all feedback on this specific model.

Just want to be clear.. I would connect a male spade to the red wire from the Garmin AMPS power cradle then connect that to the 2 orange/white strip accessory wire female spade on the Sportsman 500. I should not separate the 2 orange/white strip wires connected in the female spade. The black wire from the Garmin AMPS power cradle would go to a ground terminal block on the Sportsman 500 (not sure where). Where is a good place to connect the black ground wire from the Garmin AMPS power cradle?

Any power source . All it is , is a hot and ground.
I built a sun shield and mine comes on when I turn the key on but I moved the battery up to the rack in front the head light and run a bus where I could hook up a lot of electronics up top instead of doing what your trying to do. All my electronics are high and dry and can stand by the ATV and work on anything.

That moose pouch behind my sun shield is where I keep my cell phone. You can see the USB charger which also shows the voltage. I just run a wire over to that pouch and can charge my phone or two phones while running.

Don't have anything to do with the thread but figured you guys guys would like this.
External speaker for the VHF is black and moved it to this side of the rack and hard case hand gun holder. Like mentioned, everything is high and dry.

Dont separate the 2x orange/white - that orange/white wire feeds several accessory locations. The wiring diagram in the back of the service manual should show this I think ?

For the black wire -- any place on chassis will work. There should be a ground on the inside connections of the cigarette lighter.

Attachment is the part of the wiring diagram I am looking at.

Correct. DO NOT separate the orange/white wires. The diagram above shows why.

There is a major ground point to the right of the ECM on the top of the frame (when standing in front of the ATV. You will see a cluster of brown wires. You have many options for a ground such as tapping into any brown wire, running to the NEG battery terminal or adding a ring terminal to the existing frame ground point.
