2005 700 EFI vs 2010-11 500HO

If you had the option below what would you do?

2005 Polaris Sportsman 700. EFI. It has a winch and snow plow. Aluminum wheels. It is in perfect shape. 763 miles and 98 hours on the machine. New battery. It also has the Amsteel nylon cable in the winch. and has nerf bars under the running boards. It has been serviced regularly and has a K&N air filter on it $4000 without Plow / $4300 with Plow

or

2010 / 2011 Brand New Sportsman 500HO.
Bare Bones. No options. Steel Wheels. Would add a winch sometime.
$5400. No Tax. (Farm Use). 6 month warranty.

I would use the ATV for trails, screwing around, ice fishing, ect. I would not be using it lot each year.

I keep looking at 1-3 year old sportsmans and they are only 500-1500 savings off a new one. I am not looking for a monster ATV. I think a 500 would be plenty. This would be my first one. I would use the plow a little, dont really need right now though.

I was in your same boat. I was looking for used, but only a few years old, Sportsman. It was the same thing within 100 miles, everything used was almost the price of new. I ended up going with a new 500. They are bullet proof and give many years and miles of dependable service.

That being said, if I could have found a 700 with a winch and plow for $4300 I would of jumped all over it. The 700 is a twin, which is much smoother than a single cylinder 500. The winch and plow set up will run you about $1000, or a couple hundred less for a non-Polaris setup. Just make sure it looks clean and appears well cared for.

Just this last week I bought a 2008 800 with 50 hours and 485 miles for $4200. Seller was moving out of state and wanted to make a quick sale. Found it on Craig's list 20 miles from my house. Just have to be in the right place at the right time.

There are deals out there..I am sure. I just couldn't find one. I looked for 6 weeks. Anything even close to being a deal had issues; lost title, loan on it, selling for someone else, etc. Resale on 4x4 ATVs is very high, good for everyone when they sell.

I would go for the 700 with winch and plow for that price, that is a good deal. I don't think you would regret it.

I would get the 2011 500HO. You get all the good changes on them, like the rad 3" higher up. BUT if you want the engine braking, that will cost you extra. The 700 MAY already have it??

Ok i am going to look at the 2005 700. I know what to look for as far as wear and tear ect. But what do I look for on a 2005 700. What are the known issues ect. This ATV is coming from a large city, not the farm country ect. It is sitting in his garage to push snow and a few trail rides.

I am dumb to spend 4300 on a used 6 year old atv?

Here is the email from the guy that has it for sale.
I have a 2005 Polaris Sportsman 700. It is Fuel injected. It has a winch and snow plow. I have put aluminum wheels on it. It is in perfect shape I just never use it. I think $4,300 would be a fair price.

There is only 763 miles and 98 hours on the machine.

The older carburated models had some issues with over heating. I would never own anything but EFI models. I have never had a bit of trouble with this ATV and I have owned it since it was new.
There are no known issues. It has been serviced regularly and has a K&N air filter on it.

$4,300 is my bottom dollar unless you don't want the snow plow. I will sell for $4,000 without the plow.

I just put a new battery in it two weeks ago. It also has the Amsteel nylon cable in the winch. and has nerf bars under the running boards.

Sorry it's not cleaned up. Too cold to do that!

Unfortunately that is a good price for a machine that year in good shape. Resale is stupid high.

I just hope the resale stays high. This would be my first ATV. 3 or 4 of us are all buying one now. 2 of them bought new 1 bought used and I am still looking. Here is my thought. If I buy the 2005 700 for 4300 i can ride it for a year or two and either sell or trade it for a new one if we use them a lot.

What will a 2005 700 EFI with 1500 miles be worth in two years? Winch Plow in perfect condition, cant be much less then $4000. Right?

I would then come up with another 2000-4000 at that time and get a new polaris.
