I have a 2009 Sportsman 500 HO...I assume its in the same location. It took a little searching for me to find it too. The book is not accurate.
Standing in fromt of your machine, open the front rack/storage.
Just under your Pod, remove the piece of plastics. You'll see the fuel line with a red valve.

Yep, pull the front box off, look right under and behind the fuse panel, and you will see the red valve. Nothing like my old Yamaha's fuel shut off valve, but I'll get used to it....

You have to take the box off to get to it, that sucks balls. I've got the 2010 and as mentioned before in this post it's under the plastic piece under the pod. Not the easiest but better than under the box!

Thanks guys, found it right where you said it was.
Everything about this quad is a learning experience for me, as I have never owned one before.

Just found mine after a quick google search. The dealer pointed it out but it has been 5 months since purchased and I finally got to use it. The puzzling piece for me was pulling the small trim piece, just under the headlight. I vaguely remember it and after the google search it came back right away. Anyhow, I found this forum so something good came of it..........

The reason they stuck the cutoff valve up under the front rack is that they didn't intend anyone to use it. It is really only for service if you have to take the tank off for some reason. You don't need to shut off the gas on an EFI engine.
