New guy..engine start problem
Hey guys. New here. I have a 2008 Sportsman 500 EFI that recently Im having trouble getting started. I bought it in 2009 new to use for ice fishing, so I currently only have around 100 miles on it. At first, when I turned the key to the "on" position, the computers would kick on like normal, but then it would make a slight clicking noise, then fire up normally. Now, when I go to start it, it makes more of that clicking noise and either might or might not start. Sometimes, turning to the "on" position it might not do anything.
Whats going on? Im not very knowledgeable on the "guts" of the 4 wheeler, but hopefully will as time goes on. Is my battery getting bad? Loose connection possibly, and if so, what could it be? I managed to get it running today, and every time I went to start it later it worked fine, but its pretty much after its been sitting for a few days.
Also, just a quick question on the fan/cooling system. Is the fan supposed to come on at all times the engine is running, or only when it gets too hot. And I noticed when my fan WASNT running, the coolant wasnt flowing either. Does the coolant only flow when the fan is running?
Thanks for the help guys, I know i sound like a rookie. I just want to keep my machine running as good as I can.

Good afternoon,
The starring troubles are very likely the battery as you suspect. Get a charger on it and let it charge at the very least overnight and see what you get. (BTW, Charging longer on lower amperage is better.)
Get yourself some Sea Foam and use it!! The other issues with many machines if the fuel system, we don't drive them all the time so they sit more than they run, this spells problems for the fuel system. ESPECIALLY with the new shit fuels today. Sea Foam will correct the problem and keep it from happening again.
The fan should only run when the engine reaches a high(ER) temperature. It should NOT be running all the time.

Thanks CW. So I'm assuming that the coolant only circulates when the fan is running?
I'll have to try some Sea Foam.
The weird thing is that when I had my key turned to "on" with nothing happening, and when I started wiggling some wires it all of a sudden kicked on.....BUT still "clicked" when I try starting it.

Coolant circulation isn't related to fan operation. Coolant is circulated by a mechanical pump that operates when the engine is running, so coolant should always be flowing. Early two-strokers didn't have thermostats, but later models (4-strokers) do. As CS says, the fan only operates when the coolant reaches a pre-set (hot) temperature.

Ok, thanks guys. I'll have to try that.
Ya i was just curious about the coolant because as my machine was running I got off and looked under it and it looked like the coolant was just sitting there.
