I have a 2002 sportsman 500 4x4 that the previous owner swaped the motor i think. I need to know how can i tell the year of the motor and are the cdi different between a 99 and 02?

About the only chance you have to get a year on the motor is find a tag either the stator cover or pull start cover that starts with a W and then a bunch of numbers. The first two are the year, and that will be the year machine the motor came from. For instance a tag that says W98----- is a 1998.
