normal ????

just got a 2011 800 efi sporstman. Love the bike so far. Been reading here on some issues. Like the heat pouring out the right side making it impossible to wear shorts and keep you leg there. guess there is a update on the heat sheild???

My question is. I am in the woods and going down some rough stuff I slow down to a crawl and the clutch lets go at idle, if thg bike bounces over any thing I have a clunking noise. crack the throttle and engage the clutch and it stops. cant find anything loose is this normal????? I got off a 2003 z400 so this is a new world.

thanks guys

Michael

really. Mine puts out so much heat by the right floorboard its to hot. the fan is not running constantly and shorts is a no no. I put my foot up on the front rack to get outta the heat. the noise is only going down a grade when Idling. the clutch disengages and when the bike moves on the suspension it makes a rattling/clunking noise. I really hear it when i lock up the rear brake and it slides down the hill.

maybe a trip back to the dealer???

My 2011 800 is 2 weeks old, 15 miles, and I have the same problems. The noise is coming from the clutch area, I just started using Low when going down hills and that took care of the noise. As for the exhaust heat, I am ordering a roll of header wrap this weekend. I dont know if they changed the exhaust routing with the 2011 models or if its just in the way that the ecm is tuned, but there are several complaints about the heat.

Mornin guys,
Couple things, yea the twins can get hot, on the '11 and newer. IIRC the engine was moved back. Making the header pipe closer to your legs, likely making it hotter.

About the noise, its from the tranny. Its the chain running over the drain plug. Its on ALL twins... Worse on the NON EBS models, like mine! Something you just need to live with, its the way it is. You will find if you stay on the throttle you will greatly reduce the contact between the chain and the steel plug. It happens when the wheel speed exceeds engine speed. Keep them the same or engine greater and you get no noise!

I have noticed wear on the drain plug from the chain you speak of. Does this cause any damage to the chain? I was thinking,' something is not right here', and that the chain must either be stretched or need adjusting if possible.

YES, except mine is a little bit more worn. The wear on mine covers almost 1/4 of the way across the plug.

I suppose once its worn down, that it will only wear so much and then no further?

Perhaps grinding down the end of the plug, and then making it real smooth with some fine grit emery cloth will avoid the chain having to do it?

I briefly thought of getting a new plug, but then nixed the idea. Perhaps the new plug would also protrude too far into the case?

I thought about that too. I decided against it because my thinking is that plug is much harder and tougher than the case. If its not running over that hardened plug it could be running on the side/bottom of the gear case. That's made of pot metal/alum allow. NOT NEARLY as tough as the hardened steel plug.

SO, I took the burrs off but left the plug alone...
