Fan stays running when key is off

I have a 2005 Polaris Sportsman 500 HO. Last night i was riding and the display said it was running hot. I cut it off and the fan continues to run but very slowly. It's not running fast like it does when it is actually cooling it down. Is there a relay that might be bad or does anyone have an idea of what it might be? Can i wire the fan to a toggle switch and just run it all the time when I'm riding? Where is the relay and the temp sensor on the motor?

I ran some wires to the on/off switch on the handlebar. I can use that to cut it on and off. Anyone know if this will be okay?

I have an '08 400. I know if the fan is running on my fourwheeler, and if the key is left on and the red engine switch is turned to off, the fan will continue to run until the engine cools down. If the switch and key are off, the fan shuts off. Not sure if this helps or answers your question, but hope it helps.

It ended up being the ECM going bad. I called the local shop and it was part of the ECM recall. I have to take it to them tomorrow and they will put a new one on.

How does the engine cool down with just the fan running blowing air through the radiator? This is a feature that makes no sense. Without the coolant circulating all that is cooling off is the radiator.

Bobx2, you're right. you are supposed to leave it running while the fan is on. If you turn it off and turn just the key on it is cooling the radiator and the water inside it but not the motor since it is not circulating, i always leave the atv running until the fan cuts off then cut the ATV off

I had the same experience with my Son In Laws 05 500HO, dealer changed ECM for a recall and problem solved.

I had something very similar just happen to my 06 500. It would come on as soon as the key would turn on, then sometimes just not come on at all. I heard from buddies of mine that most likely it was the ecm.. So I just wired it directly to the headlights, turn on the low beams, I have a fan.. Simple and cheap fix for the time being until I find a cheap used ecm.
