Headlights, electric start, & 4wd. Not working

I have a 1996 400 sportsman and the headlights aren't working. Low or high. 4wd stopped working and the electric start stopped working. I replaces atheist start button and headlight switch and tge headlights worked for a couple seconds but went out again and the push button 4x4 has been replaced also.

Did you ever determine the fix? My 96 Sportsman has the exact same issues.

I have some of these issues with my '97 sportsman 400 as well. Low beams work when the switch is on high beam, high beam light doesnt work. Only the reverse light works on dash, all of the bulbs are good, not sure about the AWD because I don't have a chain on the front yet.

Do you have any suggestions where to begin looking?

My 400 had sat since spring, I put a 2 amp auto-charger on it for a day before loading it for hunting season. Prior to loading it on the trailer, I brought the rpm's up to full for 3 seconds to clean out the exhaust from carbon and any incects that may have nested; I got a back fire and the motor died.

I never got the neutral light to come back on, I could back up but I needed to use the override button to keep the engine from dying (no reverse light either), and my headlights never came on after that point. I have found that the brake light filiment popped/melted.

With the incident occuring in an instant fashion, is there anything that stands out to be the likely culprit?

Start with the battery terminals, follow the main ground to the engine, remove it and clean it and the mating surface. If you have a schematic it should show you how many other grounds there are attached to the frame. Find the one for the head lights and clean it to. Faulty grounds have a way of causing a ton of really weird electrical issues. Your other issue almost sounds like a faulty voltage regulator.
