guestion on 1998 sportsman 500

I have a 1998 sportsman 500 what gen is it looking for some assc. for it

The 4th digit of the vin is the Gen type. It should be a "C" Gen IV. The 10th digit should be a "W". The 6th digit and 7th digit should be 50(means 500 engine). I hope that helps.

Hey am going to pick up this atv tomorrow it has 428 miles and 39 hours is there any major I should look for besides u-joints, fluids cracks or leaks?

Check the oil. Make sure it don't smell like gas. Test drive it and make sure it runs good and don't backfire. The 500 has been known to have bad cams and flywheels. Those older atv's are better made than the new ones that are made today. PM me what price and mileag. I will tell you if its a bargain or not. I deal with those older models all the time. Buying them non running and fixing them or parting them out. Look at belt cover and listen for belt/clutch noise.
