06 sportsman 800 overheat issue

I recently bought an 06 sportsman 800 with 800 mi on it. I've been plowing with it and the other day it overheated on me. I have checked the water pump impeller, removed the fan and cleaned the radiator and checked the thermostat. I can run it for about a half hour before it over heats. When the hot light flashes the fan is is not running. If I shut it off and turn the key on the fan will run. It seams when the machine warms up good the fan quits working. Also my battery won't hold a charge I have tO jump it to start it. Could this be the problem? I read that if the temp sensor is unPluged the fan will default to run constantly but I'm guessing the battery must be fully charged for it to run? Thanks for any help you guys can give. Lots of good info on here.

needs a good battery for evry thing to work right, if battery is bad, thats where I would start, they are expensive for the twins, $120-130, I get the AGM ones fom o'reilly's, seem to work well. yes if you unplug sensor, lower right corner of radiator with key on , fan should come on, can get sensor from auto store, wont have the right plug in on it ,you willhave to splice the old one onto new sensor,Wells #sw-526, Napa -Echlin# FS-147

Thanks for your help. The temp sensor for mine is on the head near the thermostat I believe. If there is one on the radiator I couldn't find it. Should still work the same though correct?
