400 Sportsman fuel consumption
Can anyone tell me why the fuel consumption on my 96 Polaris 400 Sportsman is so terrible, I use very little 2 cycle oil but this thing sucks more gas than my "69" GTS Dart does at the drag strip.

Does it run normally? Or does it seem to run rich? (It has to be rich if you're using that much gas.) First thing to change on these is the needle and seat. Next, the jet needle and needle jet. Sometimes you can fix it somewhat by lowering the jet needle (leans the mixture) by putting the e-clip one slot higher on the needle. (Stock position is in the middle slot.) Also, adjust the air bleed screw accorging to the manual and leave it there. Whatever you do, don't ever sell the Dart. - MarkC

i have a 94 400L 4x4 as well, the carb has been rebuilt, fresh filters, and everything sweetened up, runs great, but as you mentioned, fuel economy sucks. I think that the little 400 on a full size frame and any additional weight you carry affect the mileage as well as how you drive the thing. I think i only get about 12 mpg or so, i have a two up seat w/ storage, and carry the wife often. Just the nature of the beast unless you can find carb problems or you have aftermarket tires that affect performance. IMHO

DwightCobra, try this one thing that only takes 15 minutes and doesn't cost anything. Move the jet needle down one step by moving the e-clip up one slot in the needle. (This will put it one slot up or lean, from center.) This is very easy to do by just unscrewing the slider off the top of the carb and doesn't require any adjustment changes. Then, use your machine for a couple tanks of gas. I did this on my old 400 two-stroker and it increased my miles-per-tank (using the way-off odometer) from just about 50 miles to over 65. If it doesn't help, you can put it back the way it was in minutes and nothing is lost.
These large displacement two-strokers vibrate a great deal, even with the balance shaft. And, needle and seat and jet wear is significant over time. (The jet needle is stainless, but the needle jet is brass.) Anyway, it sure made a difference on mine. - MarkC

Gasoline prices typically go up in the spring time, but it is only March and the country's pump figures are at near-record highs. It sure makes it hard for a driving fan to enjoy feeling the asphalt rushing underneath his or her feet. Still, it is clear that modifications have to be made in support of gas mileage. But there are approaches to be intelligent, save fuel and still get some time behind the steering wheel. You will need low car loans interest rates if you are going to be able to pay for to pay for gas costs.

Word of caution, don't go randomly changing carb settings without confirming if its running rich, lean or otherwise. Check your plugs, piston wash, etc. As much checking as you can. If you drop the needle you lean out the mid range. Yes you use less fuel, but if it runs too lean you'll cook the motor.
